-like conditions in the nation's heartland could make travel difficult. wendy gillette joins us live from new york city. >> reporter: good morning. the national weather service has received reports of 34 tornadoes in four states, now this powerful system is moving east. this is just one of more than 30 reported tornadoes that touched down on christmas day. leaving heavy damage. this one roared through alabama -- mobile, alabama tearing down parts of the church and downtown businesses. another twister hit mississippi, blowing insulation into trees and%khç peeling back walls of homes. there were some injuries reported, no deaths. >> judging from some of the damage we witnessed today it is a miracle that no one was hurt any worse than they were. >> reporter: further east in the state in stone county, theresa and her boyfriend took shelter in their truck. >> started jerking us and spinning us. >> reporter: the same fast-moving storms brought braise -conditions to parts of the country's mid section, causing 21 vehicle pile-up in oklahoma city, the system is heading east bringing treacherous conditions
of northern ohio into parts of new york even to boston so will you have a white christmas? i think i'll see a flake or two mixing in on the back side of those cities on the east coast. it's not going to be that big of a storm. the big one has already started and brought a lot of rain bringing accidents in san jose, california. they had almost a half inch, san francisco, almost an inch, not good on the roadways there and talk about bad roads, look at the next part here in the sierras. by the time this thing is done with them, five to even six feet of snow, so great for skiers, horrible as it's turned into a parking lot on some of their highways. that's is second storm. it has started. it'll cross over and here's where it gets interesting. earlier i said to dan and bianna, i said, geez, oh, pete. looking at some of the computer models. i got it a good old midwestern -- eastern oklahoma, some are over a foot of snow on christmas eve and christmas day. then you look into, and that's mostly christmas day, but watch this. as it moves, wednesday, ice up in the new england rain here and northeast.

destroyed in upstate new york after what we showed you yesterday live on our air here where the firefighters went to respond to a house fire and someone started shooting at them. let me go back and i'll tell you who the name of the shooter is now we know that this morning. william spengler is the one who police say set his own home on fire and then fired shots at the firefighters when they showed up. sean carroll tells us it's not spengler's first run-in with police. >> the first police officer managed to exchange fire with spengler who laid in wait. >> he was shooting at a berm near the home where he can barricaded himself with his weapons to shoot the innocent responders. and i will say the first webster police officers to respond engaged the shooter in probably in all likelihood, saved many lives. >> reporter: spengler's criminal past dates back to july, 1980, the death of his grandmother. >> spengler lived alone at this house for over 40 years. she was found dead at the floor of the dwelling by her grandson, william spengler, who lives next door. spengler discovered the body at 12:45 p.m
